Poultry House Design - What You Should Consider Before You Build

For those who have decided that keeping chickens is a good way to cut down on their weekly grocery bill the one thing you have to keep in mind is your poultry house design. Your hens are going to need a safe dry place to roost and to lay their eggs. If you do not have room for some form of hen house you may want to think about other alternatives to keeping your own chickens.

The Basic Poultry House

When you start to look at basic poultry house design you are going notice that they come in a tremendous variety of shapes and sizes. No two hen houses seem to look exactly alike, this is pretty normal especially when you stop to realize that the majority of them are home built by people with only a small amount of building experience if any. This is not really a problem as you do not need to be a master builder to put up your own poultry house.

One thing that you will notice with even the most basic poultry house design is that it is made with one thing in mind and that is to provide your flock of hens a secure home. Chickens are a relatively hardy species, but they do have certain requirements including needing a place to stay out of the weather. This means both the cold winter weather and the hot summer sun as they do not have sweat glands to help them stay cool.

What Your Poultry House Must Have

In your poultry house design there are certain elements that you must have and some that are considered non essential but can provide a much nicer environment for your chicken. If you have been looking at different plans you will find that most of them have the same main features no matter what shape they are.

The most important features that the inside of your poultry house should have if you want to have eggs are nesting boxes. These are small "rooms" that your hens will roost in to lay their eggs, chickens prefer to lay their eggs in small darker spaces that are lined with straw and it gives them the sense of being in a nest which is where they would lay their eggs in the wild.

You should also provide them with enough roosting perches so that there is enough space for all of your hens to roost up off the ground at night. Before they were domesticated chicken roosted in trees at night to stay safe from predators and the perches provide them with the same sense of security.

While including a window in your poultry house design is not an absolute necessity you will find that if you put a window in the side where the majority of your summer breezes blow from it will help to keep your poultry house well ventilated and cooled down during the hot summer months. All of this can easily be incorporated into any design and will go a long way toward keeping your hens healthy and happy.

Define Your Style - Home Design Ideas

Leonardo Da Vinci once said, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication" and when it comes to interior design this can often by the best route to take if you don't trust your own design instincts. There is a danger however, that your house will blend into every other Magnolia drenched, carbon copy home that we see cloned on every street in Britain today. Why do we practice such safe design? Is it because we suffer from a lack of imagination, or are home owners up and down the land just not brave enough to experiment? Maybe in this difficult economic climate we cannot risk straying from that safe colour palette of cream and white?

I say, why create a 'blank canvas' (just in case you move home), for someone else to put his or her stamp on. Look for inspiration everywhere and don't fear your own style. There are several ways in which you can experiment without breaking the bank and below are a few ideas and tips, which could inspire you to create your own unique groove. Firstly, do a little research. Websites such as housetohome have a fantastic gallery of pictures and suppliers that can inspire you and are less likely to be found in the house next door.

Create a mood board. Collect images, colour swabs and fabric samples in order to focus your ideas and inspire you. This way you will be able to see which colours and styles go together and it will also help you commit to only buying what you need. Steer clear of the plain and create simple elegance by choosing a simple colour palette but also experimenting with different textures of paint and fabrics. B&Q have a paint colour mixing service, which can match any of your favourite items.

Add a splash of colour by adding cushions and throws or curtains. Cushions, and more surprisingly curtains, are easy to make if you have a bit of time on your hands and you can get quality designer fabrics at greatly reduced prices online. Stores such as http://www.digbyandwilloughby.co.uk sell designer fabrics at £10 a meter instead of the recommended retail price of £30 to £100 a meter. If you don't fancy making curtains yourself, Digby & Willoughby can get these made up for you. Alternatively breathe life into a favourite chair with new upholstery with Fabrics from Digby & Willoughby.

Accessorise with one or two unique pieces such as a beautiful free standing mirror or a piece of artwork. To save some pennies you could visit auction houses such as lotsroad or criterionauctions. I recently found a fantastic seascape oil painting in a charity shop and a beautiful art deco bedroom suite on freecycle.org so keep your eyes peeled. Love the traditional? Experiment with mixing the traditional with the new to avoid being old fashioned. Choose classic wallpapers with a funky twist from companies such as Cole & Sons and Zoffany to create a feature wall. Visit reclamation yards such as wellsreclaimation or sites such as salvo.co.uk to find beautiful antique wooden furniture and natural materials to create a classic and unique vintage look.

A statement piece of furniture can be the inspiration for the design of your whole room. Cover an old chest of drawers or table with fantastic hand printed wallpaper, protected with layers of clear varnish and jazz it up with new or antique handles. Try emmamolony.com for hand printed wallpapers. Go off piste, I recently purchase antique music scores from a local bookshop, which cost me 30p each and they make the perfect vintage wall coverings. If you religiously follow modern styles, what is the buzz from the world of interior design, what are the hot colours for 2010?

Colours from Mexico such as, burnt oranges, sunny yellows, gingers and taupe's are on trend. Various shades of midnight blue with greying whites are in vogue and as well as being chic and ultimately classic, they would be a good long-term investment. Soft vintage colours, such as neapolitan pinks and yellows reflect the current boom in homemade crafts and reclaimed materials. Other colours in style for 2010 will be natural hues, soft beiges and nudes with green or purple accessories. There are plenty of ways to create your own unique style and to update your home. And remember, to play on the words of Jim Rohn, 'if you don't design your own style, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much!'

Here are different tips and ideas to take care of all your home decor dilemmas, giving you a happier and better place to live and enjoy. Go through these simple redecorating tips and change your home ambience from tense to serene in just a few steps.

Fix the Clutter
One of the biggest hindrances for home decor is the useless clutter that lies around the house. Feng Shui experts suggest that things scattered around the house act as hindrance for the smooth flow of chi or life force in the house. This acts as obstacles to success, health, happiness and even your love life. So the first step in home improvement is to throw away all the unwanted bags and accessories that you haven’t used for years. Now organize your stuff in a way that is easily accessible and doesn’t come in your way. So whether it is the make up kit or the college time material that you no longer require, put them in boxes and stow them away.

Color Styles
One of the easiest ways to go from drab to glam is to color your walls. Cream and white are the chart toppers for soothing colors of this year. One can also go for soft pastel hues like salmon, ice blue, mint, pale lily and gentle yellow as well. To add some vibrant appeal to your wall, go for some scarlet red, baby green or soft blue to complete the look. To complete the look of your home decor put a beanbag or some throw pillows. One can also opt for patterned patchwork quilt or those throw rugs to give the room a cozy and homey feel.

Befriend the Nature
If you are one of the person’s who enjoy being part of the nature then one very essential home improvement tip would be to have top of open spaces in your home. So add plants to your home interiors and open those windows wide open. There are many indoor plants to select from nowadays. So whether it is the money plant, ivy or the Chinese bamboo plant these greens will definitely add some positive energy to your home decorations.

Create Special Zones
When going for home improvement, one important decor decision is to identify the different zones in your house. Once you have planned out the individual areas in your house for work, leisure, entertainment, study and sleep it becomes easier to give each section a personalized touch. Go for a separate area for television, DVD player and your music system. Your work out equipments can go very well in this area, giving you the extra energy for the workouts.

This will also help in putting a stop to TV dinners. Sharing a peaceful meal with your family is one of the best ways to stay connected with each other and you don’t want the TV to cut into this valuable time.

Go for Luxury Washroom
Washrooms are the most neglected zones in terms of interior decor. But having a cubicle-sized loo is just not done. How on the earth will your lady enjoy a long and dreamy beauty bath when each time she tries to move, she bump into walls. Get that grumpy and space eating washing machine out of the way. Add a small plant to your washroom to give it a lively look. Also have some spacious bathroom cabinets put for all your loofahs, body wash and other bath accessories.

Make Room For Things
Small spaces are not an excuse to keep things in a haphazard manner. Have loads of storing place in your different rooms and keep things out of your way. Make the best possible use of the storage space with bed-boxes, cupboards and showcases. Neatly kept things are also very much a part of home decorations. If you are thinking about paintings and statues, keep them restricted to your living room.

Remember, home improvement is everything about de-stressing and making your home more comfortable and inviting. So get started and redecorate your home with these fantastic home improvement ideas.
